Ben Barnes
When the discussion turns to heroic Texans most people are quick to toss out names like Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, some even Howard Hughes or the Bushes, maybe the boxer Jack Johnson, what about Lyndon B. Johnson or Nolan Ryan?
These names predominantly come up when the talk surrounds who has represented the state in an appropriate manner. One name that is rarely heard is that of a man who has dedicated his life to bettering Texas for Texans. That man is Ben Barnes.
The former lt governor of Texas Ben Barnes has been out of the politics since 1973. His thirteen years in office were marked by a significant increase in spending on higher education, environmental quality and health care for the elderly, handicapped and mentally retarded.
It takes a lot more than leaving office to hold back this Texan. Since resigning from office Ben Barnes has steamed straight ahead in a multitude of ventures and investments with one main goal: The vast improvement of Texas. After founding the Ben Barnes Group, a consulting and lobbying business, Barnes has been driven by what he sees as:
“Texas... drifting toward mediocrity...” For a man who bleeds the red, white and blue of the Texas flag and whose heart has been replaced by the Lone Star that represents the state, a shift to mediocrity is unacceptable to Ben Barnes.
Ben Barnes has been a champion of Texas his entire life. He has fought for Texas in politics, in business, in every arena available to him. The former politician Ben Barnes has tirelessly defended the upkeep of his beloved state and for that he should be recognized with the names above as a true Hero of Texas.
