Ben Barnes Politician
Born April 17th, 1938 in Gorman, Texas, Ben Barnes politician was raised on a peanut farm. The future politician played high school football, received high grades and eventually chose the University of Texas at Austin as his choice institution of higher education.
He earned his degree in business administration and jumped straight into politics upon graduation. In his thirteen years in politics he was noted for his dedication to education. Barnes was a main proponent in creating the Coordinating Board for the Texas College and University System.
By 1969 he was elected Lt. Governor of Texas and was pleased to see the creation of two nursing schools, a dental school, three medical schools and four senior colleges.
He also played a supporting role in raising teacher’s salaries.
Ben Barnes Politician was honored in 2000 by the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. The endowment named after Barnes recognizes his accomplishments in leadership positions and his interest in higher education.
The Ben Barnes Fellowships program was created to give students more financial support and to assist in the recruitment of motivated students with interests in public leadership.
The LBJ School Dean, Ed Dorn said this about the honor: “Ben Barnes did more for education in Texas than virtually any other state political leader. This endowment recognizes his continuing commitment to producing the leaders our state will need in the 21st century.”
